BURGER BEER

Updated: Mar 23, 2020

“An Intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex, but it takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction” Albert Einstein.

That is exactly the challenge we put to JC, Head brewer at Devil’s Peak and Andy, owner and butcher at Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants – Create the perfect burger and the perfect beer to accompany it. In taking these two everyday products that everyone seemingly thinks they know and understand, Lager and burger, and elevate these to a whole new level.

A collaboration with Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants was also an obvious choice due to their core philosophy as a brand – understand quality meat and educate consumers on it. And as our aim is to celebrate world-class craftsmanship with every collaboration, we are very excited about the offering we will be showcasing.

Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants, a local, ethical butcher, that in fact encourages us to eat less meat and rather treat meat like a luxury, choosing the best quality and asking questions around where the meat came from in the first place. They are a whole beast butchery, that take the whole carcass and make use of it all, making sure that there is little to no wastage.

Their best butchery practices and educational approach caught our attention, as we strive for the same ethos as a South African brewery.

When asking Andy what makes the perfect burger? He responded with, the obvious “great quality meat” however he continued that it is more than that as, “All the meat we use is grass-fed and free-range, which is important in bringing the flavour and fat content to the burger, as almost all of the flavour is in the fat.”

We’ve gone with Hoppy Lager style beer for this collaboration. Which is not your standard lager, JC has dry-hopped this beer which intensifies the aromas, highlighting the hops.

Lager although a very common beer style that is drunk by most, is in fact a very complex beer to make and even more complex to make a great one. There is no interesting hop flavours or high alcohol percentages to hide behind. On top of that, we increased the challenge, by needing it to pair perfectly with Andy’s creation. The result; not only did JC knock this brief out of the park with a refreshing, crisp yet beautifully aromatic Hoppy Lager, using Cascade, Citra and Mosaic hops, but Andy matched it with a secret combination of grass-fed, deboned brisket, chuck, short rib and prime rib, with the perfectly balanced fat to meat ratio. Every sip leads to an indulgent bite, which leads to another sip; step and repeat – you get the drift. So, if you long for the perfect beer, accompanied by the perfect burger, we’ve got you covered.
